Tips for Picking A Major

Picking a major can be one of the most challenging decisions thus far for a young adult going into their first year of college. Seeing your peers choose majors can be very disheartening when you have no idea what you want to major in. The process can be stressful and very grueling. Luckily, we have a little advice on things to help you make your final decision.

Follow Your Passion

Passion is what keeps a lot of people going. Passion is doing something you never see yourself getting tired of. Why not major in something you are passionate about and make money off of it in the future? I am a firm believer in following your dreams and making money off doing what you love. Not many people can suffer through a job they hate just for the money, so do what you love and bet on yourself.

Follow the Money

The most common advice on picking a major is “choose something your passionate about.” This can be true for most people (including me) but something I’ve realized as I’ve gotten older is that some people don’t want their passion/hobbies to be a part of their future work-life after they graduate. Some people just want the money to be able to afford their hobbies and other areas of life. As a society, we tend to tell people that thinking only about the money is bad, but sometimes it’s the right thing to do depending on what that person envisions their life being. Some people are also not fortunate enough to have a passion that needs a degree for them to succeed in their career.

Follow Comfortability

If the perfect major doesn’t exist for you and you don’t want to follow the money, choose a major that you could see yourself doing for the rest of your life. If you can see yourself in this professional field being happy and productive then choose it. For some people the perfect major does not exist and picking something you make money in and would have the time to do the things you want could be as perfect as perfect gets.
